LONDON – Laying her racket and racket bag down, Iga Swiatek will have to wait a little longer.

She is set to face former world number one Ons Jabeur in the women’s singles third round match at the US Open.

Swiatek, aged 26, has been playing in a number of qualifying matches at the tournament but this will be her first appearance on the main draw.

Jabeur, at 21, is currently ranked seventh in the world and will be aiming to move into the top 30 and reach her first Grand Slam semi-final.

When asked how Jabeur, who won the first two majors of the 2014 season for Luxembourg, has improved his game since his first appearance at Wimbledon in 2014, Swiatek replied: “He’s been working hard at tennis. There was a reason he was in top 10 all year long. His technique improved and that’s what helped him get here.”

Jabeur has not reached a Grand Slam final since 2014.

The two will meet in the third round on Centre Court, which is set to start at 3.00pm local time (5.00am BST).

After her win in the doubles first round, Swiatek, who has come through qualifying matches with a win over the world No. 13 Yanina Wickmayer and a runner-up performance over world No. 10 Yanina Puigserver in the women’s doubles third round, will return to her doubles partner, Anna-Lena Gruszczyca.
