The 29-year-old is thought to have died after being stabbed during a mugging in New York City, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. But the story did not end there.

Shortly after the drama unfolded, reports emerged that the star was the victim of “nonstop” online bullying, including death threats and taunts targeting his physical appearance, his sexuality and his religious beliefs.

Brand is believed to have died from a wound to the neck, but is not believed to have died from a stab wound as police have said.

In a series of videos posted online following Brand’s death, the star, who was with co-star and partner in crime James Franco on a shopping trip when he was attacked, said it was a “traumatic experience” and that he had never experienced such abuse.

Following the attack, Brand tweeted he was “deeply saddened and profoundly sad. Please know how truly sorry I am for all that I have and will do to make things better for the people I love.”

In a separate video, Brand said: “I think I might have been one of the fortunate ones – I have a lot of things to live for, and I believe that God brought me to this point today because he doesn’t want me, or this world, to go through this.
