What Evan Peters learned after 10 months in Jeffrey Dahmer’s head-chopping lair

A new book is shedding new light on the gruesome murder of comedian Roseanne Barr

The media are still obsessed with the case of Jeffrey Dahmer in the early 90s. But one book, an ambitious project by Yale graduate Evan Peters, is trying to put the story back in perspective.

Peters is the author of the novel Dahmer’s Story, which was adapted into the film Dahmer starring Robin Williams as the killer. The book, published on July 27, was the first of Peters’ two lengthy projects, in collaboration with his father, David, a journalist who wrote biographies as well as the critically acclaimed Dahmer: Murder in the Bronx.

Peters talked to TIME about the novel:

How would you describe the novel? Is it an attempt to understand Dahmer from the perspective of Dahmer himself or the other side of that coin, the other Dahmer?

It’s the latter, and I think I’ve been doing enough of that in the book. So we were interested in the other side of the coin, trying to make sense of Dahmer. And then when I spoke to my father, he was able to talk to me about what it was like writing the book and he said he was happy enough not to be writing the book, he had enough to do.

You’ve been working on this for 10 months now. How do you do it?

This is a process that takes time and a lot of hard work. The hard work is in reading and analyzing Dahmer, but then it’s also having a relationship with my father, which is the other part of it. He has been working on this for quite a few years, and I’ve been working on this as a writer since I was 11.

I have to say that it is not a walk in the park. It’s not a simple thing to do, but I’m very happy with how it’s going and excited to be going forward with it.
