Young son of Atlanta-born Afrobeat star Davido drowns in family pool in Nigeria
In mid-May, Davido was in the middle of a sold-out tour of the United States when he was involved in an apparent traffic accident in Nigeria with his young son, Lekan, who was four months old at the time. They were stopped at a traffic light in a parking lot in Lagos, where Davido’s car apparently sideswiped a motorcycle waiting for a green light. Davido’s Toyota Camry was left on the scene, where a passerby pulled it out of the driver’s side window. The passenger and the two young boys were able to escape unhurt.
Since being forced to cancel a concert in Jacksonville, Florida, on June 5, Davido has returned to the U.S., where he is scheduled to perform on June 28 in Baltimore. Two days before that performance, on May 31, Davido and his two sons were involved in a separate traffic accident in Nigeria, in which the youngest boy, Yemi, who was born in August, drowned in his father’s swimming pool.
Davido’s representative in Nigeria, Andrew Udeon, tells TIME the incident in Lagos was likely a tragic accident. He also says the Nigerian government has been notified of the incident, and he adds that Davido is in the process of investigating this as well as reviewing his insurance.
Davido was at his Lagos residence at the time of the accident. On Wednesday, May 28, he met with Lagos state officials and police to discuss the accident. He was also traveling to Lagos on Wednesday when the news broke. Davido was in the middle of a tour of the U.S., including performances in Dallas, New York, San Francisco, LA, Chicago, New Orleans, Detroit, and Jacksonville.
A video from the scene shows Davido in the driver’s side door of his car, talking to a passerby who took it from the driver’s side. He can be seen standing on the sidewalk as the car sped away. The passenger, unidentified, was also seen on the phone.
