SAN FRANCISCO — Oil has been a major industry in San Francisco, and with more than 1,000 gas stations — and more than 6 million cars — the city’s gas stations are the first stop for nearly everyone who uses public transportation. But as gas prices rise and gas stations close, more and more residents and commuters are relying on mom-and-pop gas stations for filling up their tanks or to drive to work.

Just two weeks ago, San Francisco Bay Area gas stations went through three days of record-breaking prices, with nearly every gas station in town raising their prices by nearly 40 cents. While many gas stations were charging the same or even more for gasoline, some stations were charging nearly 50 cents more at the pump.
